Nofollow V/S Dofollow Links

Nofollow V/S Dofollow Links

When we talk about the term Search Engine Optimization, Don’t we come across some terms like ‘dofollow’ or ‘nofollow’ links which are always been an important terms of SEO??? We often hear about dofollow blogs or we sometimes see some sites sharing a list of dofollow blogs and many other things on this topic. Many of the readers may not know about what is actually dofollow and nofollow. This thing will also enlighten newbies about one of the major concept of SEO i.e. ‘dofollow’ and ‘nofollow’ !!!

Search Engines use links to go through all the sites on the web. What happens actually is Google bots visit your blog to go through it completely. Your content, keywords, links, etc. So, when talking about links, bots crawl through your website and find various links on your blogs; and these links can be of two types- either nofollow or dofollow where both the terms are completely opposite to each other.

Nofollow is an HTML attribute of the tag rel which tell the Search Engine bots to not to follow this link.

In WordPress, by default, all the comments are having Nofollow attribute but they can be easily removed using plugins and all the comments in it made in the past and future will be dofollow as it removes the nofollow tag from all the comments. And in even blogger,by default, all the comments are marked as nofollow but it can be tweaked to dofollow by removing the rel=”nofollow” tag from the HTML section.

In a case where your blog is dofollow, when a bot finds a link on your blog, it follows it and lands on another page. Do you know, this is the way only bots come to know about your websites and helps to index or cache them and display it in search results.

However, as I said earlier that dofollow and nofollow are completely opposite to each other. In a dofollow case, the bot follows your blog lands to another page but In a nofollow case i.e. if the link is nofollow, this nofollow tag tell the search engines or the bots to NOT to follow this links to any other websites. So, the bit won’t be able to follow that link. So, nofollow tag does not allows the bot to follow a link.

Common SEO Problems and Misunderstandings

Common SEO Problems

Increase the quality of your website by avoiding the most common SEO mistakes.

There are a few mistakes in an SEO of a website that you should avoid. These simple-to-follow guidelines are essential for the way your pages rank in search results.
  • Targetting the wrong keywords

You should carefully choose the keywords which you want to compete for. For example, if you are making a website for your local football team, you should not aim to be first for the "sport" keyword. The "sport" keyword is simply too general and there are already many old and well optimized websites that will always be ahead of you in the search results. You should find your own niche (keywords you rank for) and optimize your website for it.
  • Duplicate Meta tags

This is a common mistake among web designers. Meta tags should be unique and meaningful for each separate page. For your meta description, for example, you should use complete sentences as if you are describing your page to a friend. The page title, meta description and keywords should be different for each page. If they are the same, search engines consider them as duplicate content and rank you lower in their search result pages.
  • Missing Title tag

You should set a title for each one of your pages. It should be meaningful and relative to the actual content of your site. Avoid using titles longer than 60 characters. Search engines will simply ignore the symbols after the 60th character.
  • Website is entirely created with Flash without an HTML alternative

Although websites created with Flash can be very pretty and attractive, search engines cannot crawl them. Since they cannot index your content, you will not rank for the keywords you would like to. Therefore, you should create an HTML alternative of your Flash website and provide your visitors with the option to choose one of them. By doing this you will increase the usability of your website and improve the way search engines index it.
  • Missing "alt" tags in the code for your images

Unfortunately, search engines cannot scan what is shown on an image. They cannot distinguish a photo of a flower from a photo of a truck. The only way they receive information about an image is through its file name, its title and "alt" tag. Make sure you enter relevant title and alt tags for each one of the images on your website. You should give them meaningful names; avoid using image1.jpg, image2.jpg, etc. By doing this, search engines will receive the information they need for your images. In addition, they will be included in the search results when someone searches for a photo in Google for example.
  • Failing to create a content hierarchy

Many web designers underestimate the power of well-structured website. Search engines rank higher websites with well organized content. You should use heading tags (h1, h2, h3) to organize your text. This will improve the readability of your content and the way search engines index it.
  • Offering links on your website for money

Many people create websites only to optimize them and later sell links on their pages. Lately search engines and especially Google started to penalize such pages. Even Google Japan was penalized for buying links from bloggers. You should exchange links only with websites that are really related to the topic of your website. Avoid using any "spam" techniques to improve the ranking of your pages.

WordPress Softaculous Installation Tutorial

WordPress Softaculous Installation Tutorial

This tutorial is designed to show you how to use Softaculous to install a WordPress application to your site. It will take only few minutes and literally no advanced skills to have a fully functional WordPress instance in your hosting account.

First, login to your cPanel account and find the Softaculous icon under the "Software Services" section. It should be located in the lower part of your cPanel page, right under the "Domains" section.

Once you click on the Softaculous button, you will be redirected to the page where you have to chose the application you want to install. On the left side of your screen locate the "Blogs" category, click on it and then click on the "WordPress" link that will appear.

On the next page, press the Install button at the top of your screen to specify that you want to perform a brand new WordPress installation.

Finally, enter the required fields for your site - title, description, administrative username and password, administrative e-mail etc. and click on the "Install" button. Please note that by default Softaculous will install the application in a "wp" sub-folder. That being said, if you would like to be able to access the website only via your domain name you should delete the wp string from the "Directory" field. If you want to install the application in another sub-folder you should simply type it in the field.

That's it! Your WordPress application is installed and ready to use. You can now login and start blogging!

How to protect WordPress from Spam?

How to protect WordPress from Spam?

In this tutorial we will show you how to protect your WordPress blog from spam.
There are several solutions which can be completed:
  • 1. Make sure that your WordPress script is updated to the latest stable version. Detailed instructions regarding the WordPress update can be found on the corresponding tutorial page.
  • 2. Install a captcha plugin. A good choice is the WordPress ReCaptcha plugin. Comprehensive instruction on how to install a WordPress plugin can be found here. Once activated, the plugin will prompt for the public and the private API keys. The visualized link will take you to the corresponding Google web site where you can get the API keys for free. Paste them in the corresponding fields and activate your ReCaptcha plugin for comments and users registrations.
  • 3. WordPress comes with a preinstalled antispam solution - Akismet.
In order to use Akismet, you should have a WordPress API key. To receive a WordPress API key, you should register at the official WordPress website. The key will be included in your welcome mail.
If you already have a registration at WordPress.org, you can see your API key by visiting the WP dashboard.
To enable Akismet for your blog, follow the steps below:
Step 1. Go to your WordPress admin area > Plugins > Installed.
    Step 2. Click Activate.

    Activating Akismet

The Akismet plugin will be activated.

    Akismet Activated

Step 3. Click "enter your WordPress.com API key" (you can also click Akismet Configuration in the Plugins section)

    Enter the API Key

Step 4. Enter your WordPress API key.
    Step 5. Click Update options>>.
Step 6. If you have entered a correct API key, it will be verified.

    WordPress API Key Verified

From now on your blog will be protected from spam by Akismet. You will be able to check the comments in your blog for spam, as well as manually mark comments as spam from the blog admin area > Comments.

    Checking for spam
You can also display on your blog's front page how many spam posts have been stopped by Akismet. To show this information, you should add the Akismet widget to your sidebar. More information how to do this can be found in our article on how to add a widget to the WordPress sidebar.
  • 4. Additionally, you can prevent the comments posted by visitors that come from suspicious and malicious IPs. This can be done using the WordPress Project Honey Pot plugin.

How to install a Wordpress Plugin

How to install a Wordpress Plugin?

Plugins are tools which provide additional functionality to your application. To install a plugin you generally just need to put the plugin file into your 'wp-content/plugins' directory. Once a plugin is installed, you may activate it or deactivate it from the Plugins menu in your WP administration.

Generally the Plugin installation is a straight-forward process. In most cases it is enough to upload the plugin under the 'wp-content/plugins' directory for the WordPress installation and activate it from the administrator backend.

In WordPress 2.7 and above you can install plugins directly from the admin area. Downlod the plugin to your computer, then log in to your WP admin area and go to Plugins > Add New. Browse to the plugin archive and select it. Then click Install Now and the plugin will be installed shortly.

The removal is also straight-forward in most cases. Simply remove the directory for the plugin you would like to uninstall and it will be automatically deactivated.
Still always bear in mind that not all plugins are easy to install, so always refer to their documentation and installation instructions first.

How to Remove WordPress 3 Admin Bar

How to Remove WordPress 3 Admin Bar

In WordPress 3.1 and later versions there is a brand new feature - the admin bar. It allows you to perform administrative tasks to your blog while browsing through its front end. Of course it requires from you to be logged in with an username that has admin privileges.

There are many people, however, that would like to disable this feature. Mainly because it moves your entire website with about half an inch down and creates conflicts with some themes.

Although, this admin bar can be disabled by adding a filter in your functions.php file, the easiest and cleanest way to do this is through the WordPress user configuration page. Login with your account and then navigate to Users -> Users menu in your left column. Once on this page, hover over the selected user and click on the Edit button that appears.

On the next page, simply remove the "Show Admin Bar when viewing site" check and save the settings. The Admin bar will no longer be displayed on the front end of your blog.

How to SEO WordPress

How to SEO WordPress

  • Permalinks - WordPress tool for customizing your blog links;
  • Meta descriptions - Set a correct meta description for each page/post you make to improve your ranking in the search results;
  • Optimize your images - Allow search engines to correctly index your images;
  • Use Headings - The proper structure of your articles will rank your content higher;

How to use Permalinks to optimize your WordPress website

WordPress gives you the freedom to set your links the way you want them to look like. In the administrative area of WordPress go to Settings -> Permalinks. On this page you can choose from several predefined options or use a custom structure for your links.

You can choose the Custom Structure option and enter /%postname%/ for example. This will make your links look like http://yourdomain.com/the-name-of-your-post/. Or you can enter /%category%/%postname%/ if you want to include the name of your category in the URL. You can also add custom text or other WordPress variables. The full list of available variables that you can use in your permalinks can be found at the WordPress official website.

How to optimize your meta descriptions

You should enter the meta description for each one of your pages. Use simple but informative sentences. The search engines will check how relevant your description is to the actual content of your page so  make sure that you describe only the current page and avoid adding irrelevant information in this description.
It is a good practice to categorize your posts in articles. Once you go to the Posts -> Categories page in your admin area, note the description field available for each category. WordPress will take what you enter in this field and insert it as meta description for the category.

How to optimize your images

It is essential to have the "title" and "alt" tags specified for each one of the images you use in your posts. The search engines will then know what this image is supposed to represent. Typing the title and alt tags for each image you use, however, can be a time-consuming task. Instead, you can use the handy SEO Friendly Images plugin. For more information on how to install this plugin, you can check our tutorial on How to install WordPress plugins.
Once you install the plugin, go to Settings -> SEO Friendly Images in your WordPress admin area. On this page you can specify the ALT and TITLE tags for your images. The plugin gives you the option to use internal variables such as %title, %name and %category. With them you can set the ALT and TITLE tags of your images to the title of your post for example. The plugin does the rest. This saves you a lot of time  and keeps your images SEO-friendly .

How to use Headings to optimize your WordPress blog

You should make sure that you use the <h1> tag only for the titles of your posts.
You should use a few <h2> tags and as many <h3> tags as you need for the other headings in your posts. Doing this will allow the search engines to index the important information from your website better. A good document has headings and subheadings, because headings make it easier to determine the subject of the page.
For blog websites the best SEO practice is to set the title of your post in a heading1 tag. Most of the good WordPress templates do that. If not, you should modify the theme in order to achieve a correct output of your pages.

How to add AdSense to WordPress

How to add AdSense to WordPress

With WordPress you can easily add your AdSense code to your blog. In order to do this, first login to the administrative end of your website. Then, go to the Appearance -> Widgets menu.

In this page select to add a "Text" widget and click on the "Add" button next to it.

Then a new window with your widget will open. Click on the edit link in its right part in order to open the edit panel of the widget. You should add a title (in our case - Advertisement) and right under it the actual code that you have obtained from Google. Next, click on the "Done" button and after that on the "Save Changes" button right under it.

Add User Administration in Google Webmaster Tools

One of the most sought after features in Google Webmaster Tools was to easily give third-party people access to your Google Webmaster Tools account without giving over your own username and password and without giving them full control of your site.

Google has finally satisfied this request by adding user administration to Google Webmaster Tools.
Now, site owners, who are defined as an owner if they go through the verification process in Google Webmaster Tools, can add access for others without making them go through the verification process. The access granted is either “owner,” “full” or “restricted” access.
  • Owner Access – Anyone who has verified the site in Webmaster Tools. This enabled them to add users via the user administration, delete sites, and more super controls.
  • Full Access – Granting a user “Full” permission means that they will be able to view all data and take most actions, such as changing site settings or demoting sitelinks.
  • Restricted Access – When a user’s permission is set to “Restricted” they will only have access to view most data, and can take some actions such as using Fetch as Googlebot and configuring message forwarding for their account.
You can add users either on the overview page where it says “manage site” and then by clicking on “Add or remove users” or under the “site configuration” section where it says “user administration.”

Those with restricted access will see this label when accessing the tool:

Android Market Becomes Google Play

Android Market Becomes Google Play

google-play-logo
Google’s Android Market has undergone some tremendous changes over the last year or so. What started as just a standalone app store has quickly grown to encompass e-books, music, videos, and now Google feels like the “Android Market” moniker is getting to be too restrictive, too constraining for what they’re really trying to deliver to their users.
That’s why Google is officially putting the Android Market name to rest. Starting today, all of Google’s digital media services have been rebranded to fly under a brand new banner: Google Play. That’s right gadget buffs, despite some delectable new rumors Google Play isn’t a new tablet from the folks at Mountain View, but rather a unified brand that seeks to tie the company’s digital media services together.
According to Google Engineering Director Chris Yerga, the rebranding was something Google has been contemplating for quite some time, but the company felt that this was the “natural time” to pull the trigger.
Google has spent months and months building out the Android Market into a digital media hub, but constantly invoking the Android name seems to have led to a sense of exclusion for some users. There’s nothing about the process of renting movies, purchasing music, or skimming through e-books from Google that requires anyone interested to actually own an Android device. All of a user’s pertinent media is stored in Google’s considerable cloud and accessible from run-of-the-mill web browsers, and Google wants to drive that point home with the new Google Play brand.

As the rebrand goes live, you’ll see that most of Google’s new cosmetic efforts come into play on the web. The Android Market website has been drastically revamped to place more emphasis on the rest of the digital media that Google offers users — instead of occupying small, easy to miss tabs along the top of the page, links to Google’s Books, Music, and Video subsections and related offers now occupy prime real estate at eye-level.
That isn’t to say that changes won’t take place on your Android device of choice too. The venerable Android Market will be renamed the Google Play Store, while similar name changes will go into effect for Google’s slew of playback apps — the Google Music app for example will now be called Google Play Music. Simple enough, right? In usual Google fashion, the updates for the affected apps will go live today and will continue to roll out over the next few days.
That’s pretty much it as far as changes to the device side go — Android users have been able to access Google’s catalog of books, movies, and songs from within the Android Market app ever since their most recent design change went into effect.
This new focus on uniting Google’s digital media services on the web underscores a key concept that the search giant is hoping to drive home — the media ecosystem that they’ve created isn’t just meant for Android devices, but for users of all stripes. Yerga tells me that Google’s intent with Google Play was to not only break down the “silos” that Google’s content types were lumped into, but also to “break down the barriers between content consumption and the store experience.” Sadly, there’s no word yet if devices like Google TV units (or the mysterious Google home boxes currently in testing) will be able to enjoy the new Play media hub.

Facebook launches Messenger for Windows

Facebook launches Messenger for Windows

The social networking giant, Facebook, has now officially launched Facebook Messenger for Windows, which is a standalone app that lets you IM friends via Windows 7.
The newly introduced app lets you chat, receive notifications, and read your news feed from your desktop. In other words, the messenger lets you use Facebook without being on www.facebook.com. However, missing elements from the app are video chat (through Skype) and group chat, which are there inside its web interface.
Facebook has been testing this application since November, but an Israeli blog TechIT had leaked the download link in December, following which Facebook responded by making it publicly available. However, that was a test. It cannot be denied that Facebook is in the habit of testing its products on small percentage of its users before rolling it out, officially.

But now Facebook has officially announced to roll out this application. If you don't come across any "download" button yet, you need not worry as the app will be rolled out to users’ profiles over the next few weeks. However, if you are eager and can not wait, you can download the application - Facebook Messenger for Windows 7 - from here
If you use Windows XP, Windows Vista, Mac or another operating system, you won't be able to install the app at this time, reported Facebok on its page, adding "we're working on making the app available for more operating systems."
According to Facebook, it is currently working on a version of this app for Windows Vista. The app does not do not currently support Windows XP.
Reportedly, a Mac version is on the way, but the company has not said anything as to when that version will be out.

Facebook Page Timeline

Facebook Page Timeline

Finally Facebook announced Timeline for all Businesses to implement on Facebook pages. Facebook is giving page administrators the chance to preview, tweak, and publish their new design immediately, but the new design won’t be forced on you until March 30, 2012. In other words, you have until March 30 to play around with the new design without publishing before it must go live.

Timeline gives you an easy way to rediscover the things you shared, and collect your most important moments. It also lets you share new experiences, like the music you listen to or the miles you run.
Starting today, Timeline is now available everywhere, Here are some tips to help you get started-
Step- 1 How to Set Up your New Facebook Page –
  • Upon logging in and accessing your Facebook business page as an administrator, you’ll be presented with the following message:

Start Tour: Click the green ‘Start Tour’ button to get started.
  • Set Your Cover Photo –
In the ‘About’ section of the tour, you’ll first be prompted to choose what’s called a cover photo for your page. For pages, the cover photo dimensions are 851* 315 pixels. Choose an image that representative of your brand, and don’t be afraid to get creative with it
  • Set Your Profile Picture –
Once you click ‘Next’, Facebook will prompt you to adjust your profile picture, which is the image that will get shown next to each of your updates on your wall and in users’ news feeds; it will also appear with any sponsored stories or ads that you run. A logo is a good choice here, but you can choose any image that is representative of your brand. Choose an image that fits 180*180 pixels.
Step-2: Organize Your Views & Apps
The new design features photos, likes, and apps at the top of your page below your cover photo. Photos are automatically features in the first spot, but page admins can rearrange the rest to feature the most important ones first. Admins can also customize the images that get shown for each app in this toolbar using the ‘Manage’>>’Edit Page’ dropdown via the ‘Admin Panel’, which is accessible at the top right of their business page.
Step 3: Star, Hide, or Pin
In step 3 of the tour, Facebook will prompt you to modify the items in your page’s timeline. By hovering over individual stories, you can make them wider, hide them from your timeline with the pencil icon, highlight them as important with the star icon, or delete them entirely.
A great new feature to note here is that you can pin/anchor a specific story to the top of your timeline for up to 7 days. This means you can highlight specific posts such as remarkable content, calls-to-action for your best marketing offers, or other events/ promotions you want to feature. Pinning it to the top of your page will prevent it from getting buried by more recent updates.
Step 4: Explore the Admin Panel
The new Admin Panel which, as we mentioned earlier, page admins can access from the link at the top right of their business page, allows admins to track all the activity on their page in one convenient place. From here, admins can easily respond to comments, edit their page settings, access Page Insights (i.e.Facebook page analytic), create new ads, and even change the name of their page.

Step 5: Enable Messages

The Facebook guided tour ends with information about messages, brand new features for business pages. Admins can now allow users to send them personal messages. This makes it much easier for admins to have private conversations with their fans. Use this feature when you need to discuss a topic or customer service issue in more depth, and when you’d prefer the conversation not be made public for all page visitors to see. Admins can also choose to turn off messaging capability by accessing the Admin Panel, choosing ‘Manage’>> ‘Edit Page’ >> ‘Manage Permissions,’ and unchecking the ‘Messages’ box.
